STEP BY STEP TUTORIAL
As we step into 2025, it’s time to practice what I preach: refresh your brand with new, stunning imagery! Your visual identity evolves as much as you do, and showing up with the same photos from 2019 just won’t cut it anymore. A new year brings fresh energy, inspiration, and the opportunity to capture the best version of yourself—the one you aspire to be.
Let’s talk about how I recently created a unique, fun, and creative photography session that showcases my style while demonstrating how much you can achieve with simple materials and a little creativity.
WHY REFRESHING YOUR IMAGERY MATTERS
Think of this process as cleaning your aura and showing up in your most authentic, evolved self. Your brand’s imagery speaks volumes about where you are and where you’re headed. It’s your first impression, your visual handshake with the world. Let’s make it unforgettable.
THE VISION: CREATIVE SIMPLICITY WITH DOT STICKERS
This year, I wanted to push my creative boundaries while keeping the setup simple. My trusty dot stickers came to the rescue, proving once again that you don’t need extravagant props to make extraordinary art. Here’s what I used and how I brought my vision to life:
Materials You Need:
Dot stickers (black, white, and any color you love)
Seamless paper in white, black, and yellow
White blazer (or any clothing item to match your theme)
Scissors
Push pin
Cotton cord
Pencil
Lighting equipment (I used one large octabox and two strip lights with grids)
Nikon Z8 camera
Nikon SnapBridge app
SETTING UP
THE BACKDROP
Create the Dot Backdrops:
For the white seamless paper, I added black dot stickers.
For the black seamless paper, I added white dot stickers.
This simple contrast created a visually striking look that’s both modern and playful.
The Yellow Circle Cutout:
The yellow backdrop was the star of the session, featuring a perfectly cut circle. Here’s how I achieved it:Unroll the yellow seamless paper and lay it flat.
Calculate the height where the circle should be placed and find the center of the paper’s width.
Use a DIY compass: Attach a push pin to one end of the cotton cord and a pencil to the other. Measure the radius of your circle and adjust the cord length accordingly.
Pin the cord at the center mark and use the pencil to draw a perfect circle.
Carefully cut out the circle using scissors. Take your time—precision is key!
LIGHTING SETUP
Lighting can make or break your photos. Here’s the lighting setup I used to bring this creative vision to life:
Main Light: One large octabox placed directly in front of me as the key light. This soft, even light flatters the subject and eliminates harsh shadows.
Side Lights: Two strip lights with grids positioned behind me on either side. These added dimension and a touch of drama to the scene.
CAPTURING THE SHOTS
WITH THE NIKON Z8
For this shoot, I relied on my Nikon Z8 and the Nikon SnapBridge app, which is a game-changer for self-portraits. Here’s how it works:
Connect your camera to the app to enable live view on your phone.
Adjust your camera settings directly from the app for ultimate control.
Use the timer feature to give yourself 5 seconds to pose after pressing the shutter button on your phone.
This setup allowed me to see what the camera saw, make real-time adjustments, and strike the perfect pose without running back and forth
THE HARDEST PART:THE PERFECT CIRCLE
Cutting out the yellow circle backdrop was the most challenging but rewarding part of the shoot. If you’re trying this at home, take it slow and double-check your measurements. The precision and effort you put into your props will shine through in the final images.

RESULTS
The combination of bold backdrops, creative lighting, and playful dot patterns resulted in a fresh, fun series of photos that were on-brand. These images not only reflect my creative vision but also demonstrate how much you can achieve with minimal resources and a little ingenuity.
